Elective Home Education

Elective Home Education

Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 states that:

"The parent/carer of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him/her to receive efficient, full-time education suitable to his/her age, aptitude and ability and to any special educational needs he/she may have either by regular attendance at school or otherwise."

Elective home education is where parents or guardians decide to provide education for their children at home instead of sending them to school. It's not home tuition provided by us, or where the we provide education otherwise than at a school.

When parents inform us that they're home educating their child, or remove them from a school to educate them at home, they're added to the register of children who are being home educated.

We're required to ensure that children receive education appropriate to their needs and ability - this can be delivered in a number of ways.

A range of documents have been produced by the EHE team. These can be found at https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/schools-and-education/school-attendance-or-exclusion/elective-home-education/.
