ICT and computing in primary schools

The 2014 National Curriculum for computing will have a significant impact on primary schools. There will be an increased emphasis on computing, algorithms and computational thinking and schools and the possibility of less curriculum time for the delivery of the foundation subjects.

Schools will need to redesign their curriculum - it is highly unlikely that their ICT scheme of work will match the needs of a computing scheme of work. Additionally, schools should recognise that some of the tools that were previously delivered in ICT are actually tools that should be delivered across the curriculum.

When designing the new curriculum it is important to balance the need for programming with the need to develop other aspects of computing.  Schools must remember that the aims include enring that pupils can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems and that they are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
