Educational Visits Leader Training

Further to information given out at EVC training and Network meetings please find attached information that may be of interest to School Visit Leaders. The Visit Leader Training is provided by Colleagues in Telford and Wrekin and endorsed through the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel.

Please find below and attached details about the Visit Leader Training for next academic year - Please note I have had to change the November date from 8th to the 22nd.  Although not a re-requisite, VL training is strongly recommended for staff taking their young people on Educational Visits and/or leading outdoor learning activities.

Visit Leader Training

Visit Leader training (theory only) 3 hours
Venue: Wellington Town Council Chamber, Wellington Library, Wellington, TL1 1LX
Course dates: 1pm to 4pm Tuesdays: 15th Oct 2019 / 11th Feb 2020 / 7th July 2020
Fee: £40pp with SLA /£49pp outside of SLA

Visit Leader Training FULL (Includes theory and practical sessions - 6 hours)
Venue: Telford Town Park Visitor Centre
Date: 9.00am to 3.30pm Fridays 22nd Nov 2019 / 14th Feb. 2020 / 22nd May 2020
Fee: £60 with SLA/ £73pp outside SLA

VL Theory Course content
1. Introduction including an opportunity for participants to identify and share their aims and concerns
2. Benefits and perceived barriers
This session will encourage VLs to identify the potential benefits of educational visits and consider how to maximise learning opportunities, objectively evaluate the success of the visit, setting clear aims and objectives as the first step in risk management and explore perceived barriers to running educational visits
3. Legal expectations
This session will highlight the overriding importance of Visit Leaders following their Establishment’s visit policy / procedures as required by their Educational Visits Coordinator (EVC). Provide a definition of negligence vs. accident and highlight topical / current FAQs relating to legal issues and visits (e.g. supervision ratios, CRB checks, inclusion, first aid)
4. Planning, leading and evaluating
This session will clarify that documented evidence of risk management is a required part of the planning process and show the group recommended approaches to proportional documentation of risk management that meets their employer’s requirements. Consider ongoing (or dynamic) risk management and highlight practical methods to manage risk. The session will also explore importance of and methods for evaluating visits to inform future visit planning

Additional practical session includes:

Visit Leaders should leave the course able to demonstrate basic competence in:
• Simple way-finding
• Group management in a range of typical outdoor settings that must include working by water
• How to document risk-benefit management for a site / visit to satisfy the requirements of their establishment

3. Managing groups when moving on foot
4. Managing groups at road crossings
5. Picnic Sites
6. Water hazards
7. Consideration of specific environments participants use or would like to use
